About Wexford

Wexford is a beautiful medieval town on the south-east coast of Ireland situated at the mouth of the River Slaney.

This town was founded in the early 900’s by the Vikings. Their legacy includes our narrow winding streets and our town’s name, Wexford, derived from the Norse, Weissfiord – inlet of the mudflats.

Wexford is the headquarters of the world renowned international Wexford Festival Opera and Wexford Fringe Festival. With beautiful galleries, buildings, shops and restaurants along one main street, the town has a lot to offer you as a visitor and is small enough to explore and enjoy by foot.

Only two hours from Dublin, 45 minutes away from Waterford and 20 minutes from Rosslare Harbour, Wexford is a town conveniently situated for everyone.
